That group of superstar athletes consisted of NBA legends Magic Johnson, Michael “Air” Jordan, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, John Stockton, David “The Admiral” Robinson, Karl “The Mailman” Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, Clyde “The Glide” Drexler, Patrick Ewing and Christian Laettner yet the world would come to know them as the “Dream Team.”  Rumors have always circulated that the team was originally suppose to feature Isaiah Thomas, a rumor Scottie Pippen all but confirms by mentioning the Bulls vs. Pistons rivalry in the Dream Team 20thAnniversary documentary.  “I don’t think we wanted to be on the team if he was on the team. We’re enemies,” Scottie Pippen said of the personal rivalry between his Bulls teammate, Michael Jordan and Thomas.  This rivalry was arguably the reason why Thomas was snubbed and coercion to convince a reluctant Michael Jordan to join the team ensued.  Of course Mike agreed and the rest was golden at least in terms of obtaining Olympic gold.

Gabby is also the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around champion, and team competitions at the same Olympics (2012). Gabby starred as a member of the gold-winning U.S. team at the 2011 World Championships. This 16 year old sensation has paid a critical price in back flipping into stardom with constant criticism about her keen African features. A staffer at her small-town gym suggested she consider getting a nose job! The punch lines and mean spirited comments continued as “haters” through social media outlets voiced their issue with the up keep of her hair.

When thinking of men’s track and Jamaica, one name comes to mind — Usain Bolt. The highest paid track athlete in the world first exploded onto the Olympic scene at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Fresh from clinching the Austin Sealy trophy for Outstanding Athlete at the Carifta Games in 2004 in Bermuda, the “Fastest Man In The World”, was confident and poised for his victory as a professional until he was sidelined by a hamstring injury. Bolt would return to dominate and raise the bar higher than imagined with world record setting personal best times that earned him Olympic gold in both the 100m and 200m events at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the first athlete to do so. Despite claiming the gold medal for the 100m and 200m events yet again, it was the combined performance of Usain and his teammates Yohan Blake, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter in the Men’s 4X100 Relay that had tongues wagging in London. Who was this trio of sprinters and why were they much more than Bolt’s band of “merry men?”
