Tainted by a 26 year old drought and a world record surrounded by drug allegations, witnessing the 2012 U.S. Women’s 4×100 Relay team grace the Olympic world stage was like a breath of fresh air. The virtually invincible quartet composed of U.S. sprinters Carmelita Jeter, Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight and Tianna Madison shined the spotlight on a historic moment in Olympic achievements when they clocked in at 40.82 seconds, shattering the  41.37 world record engrained by Germany over two decade ago.  The young ladies in red, white and blue had not only lifted a dark cloud over the 4×100 relay event but renewed faith in a U.S. track worldwide.

In the long standing list of accomplishments, Venus and Serena Williams have etched their names in tennis history for generations. The 2012 Summer Olympics in London provided tremendous drama as Serena Williams thunderous 100 mph serve thoroughly thumped Maria Sharapova in the women’s singles gold medal match at the 2012 Summer Olympics, winning 6-0, 6-1 in a match that lasted barely over an hour. And the score didn’t even really reflect how dominant Williams was.

Along with his Jamaican teammates, he also set the world record in the 4×100 meters relay.  Bolt is the reigning Olympic champion in these three events, the first man to win six Olympic gold medals in sprinting, and a five-time World champion. He was the first to achieve a “double double” by winning 100 meters and 200 meters titles at consecutive Olympics (2008 and 2012). Bolt has sprinted to world class awards including SIAAF World Athlete of the Year, Track & Field Athlete of the year, and Laureus Sportsman of the Year (twice).

From the opening ceremony to the field to the post Olympic parties, athletes and fashion royalty from around the world showed their patriotism to their country with more than just record breaking performances and gold medals.  Some Olympians displayed their pride for their country with their wardrobe capturing the attention of the masses and the media with their fashion forward and flamboyant outfits and hairdos or by making a signature fashion statement through face art, nail art and diamond studded grills. Fashion designers Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, Giorgio Armani, Puma/Cedella Marley and Adidas were among the style elite in athletic and high fashion who lent their sense of style to opening ceremony “Parade of Nations” outfits floating around Olympic stadium as well as the uniforms of some of the world’s greatest athletes.

I was quite fascinated and inspired by all the world-class athletes that made the trip to the Summer Olympic Games in London, England to chase their dream of earning a gold medal. I must admit that I am truly a “girly girl” but was compelled to write a story on 17 year old boxing sensation Claressa Shields who punched her way from the mean streets of Flint, Michigan to the gold medal stand as the Women’s Middleweight Champion at London’s Summer Olympics. I truly admire Shields determination, commitment, drive and hard work to accomplish a once in a lifetime feature.
